v     Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma

v     Grew up on a chicken farm in Tracy, California

v     Currently lives in California (since the age of 10)

v     Uses Oklahoma in the setting of several of her novels

v     Received National Book Award for her 1st book, Marked by Fire, in 1982

v     1st illustrated book, Brown Honey & Broomwheat Tom, won Coretta Scott King Award in 1994

v     currently serves as poet laureate for Oklahoma Center for Poets & Writers at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa

v     has taught in middle & high schools, and universities for total of 25 years

v     fluent in English, Spanish & French

v     gives 2 books away through a drawing on her website every month (www.joycecarolthomas.com)

v     incorporates food in many of her poems

v     majority of works focus on magic of sound, rhythm, poetry, song & oral traditions

v     favorite thing about writing is young reader’s honest expressions about stories & poems
